Dr. McNitt, Assistant Professor of Soil Science/Turfgrass, has been with the Pennsylvania State University for 21 years. He presently teaches two courses in the 4 year Turfgrass Science curriculum, and one course in the 2 year program. He conducts research relating to athletic field surface characterization. Dr. McNitt has been honored nationally by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, The Musser International Turfgrass Foundation, The Crop Science Society of America, The American Society of Agronomy, and the Sports Turf Managers Association. He has consulted on numerous golf course construction and renovation projects and athletic fields construction and renovation at all levels of play from high school through professional sports complexes.

Ty McClelan, Agronomist for the USGA will discuss the chronic problems he encountered this season. Though solutions can be sometimes difficult to find for these continual problems, Mr. McClelan will offer advice and steps to begin the repair process.
Irrigation Water Quality - What You Need to Know (1:00 to 2:00 p.m.)
Dr. Nick Christians of Iowa State University plans to delve into this often misunderstood topic. Plan to attend this session if you are at all concerned about the water quality used to irrigate your fine turf. Dr. Chrisitans will share his knowledge as a grower of how water quality affects plant and soil health.

Who Manages Your Fairy Ring? (3:00 to 4:00 p.m.)
Fairy ring seems to pop up whenever it feels like it, mottling your turf and sometimes causing severe injury. Dr. Mike Fidanza will explain this disease and give you an understanding of its complexities in order to manage it with the tools you have. Dr. Michael Fidanza is an Associate Professor of Horticulture at Penn State Berks. Fidanza’s research focus is turfgrass ecology, specifically turfgrass IPM and the evaluation of plant protection products (i.e., fungicides, herbicides, plant growth regulators) and cultural practices in turfgrass ecosystems, and the biology and ecology of fairy ring disease in turfgrass. Fidanza also investigates the benefits and uses of spent mushroom substrate for the lawn and landscape, crop production, and the environment.
